Recently, I signed up for the Chase British Airways special card offer of 100k British Avios points after spending $20k in one year. I saw the 100k and went for it, but realized in hindsight that was pretty stupid. That’s because the regular card offer gives you 50k British Avios points for spending $3k in the first three months. All you need is for two people (you and your spouse/partner) to apply for the card, meet the spending requirement ($6k total), and earn 100k points! British Airways allows you to share a family account, so really, I didn’t need to spend the $20k to earn 100k. What’s done is done. We learn from our mistakes and we move on.
So here’s my $20k spending challenge:
- 50,000 bonus Avios after the first $2,000 in purchases within 3 months of approval
- 25,000 bonus Avios after $10,000 in purchases within the first year
- 25,000 bonus Avios after $20,000 in purchases within the first year
I had no problems meeting $20k spending requirements in September, so this month, I’m going to focus on spending $20k on the Chase British Airways card. This should be relatively easy since FPT Gift Box is in the business of buying and selling gift cards!
My first trip will be to visit my neighborhood Safeway to buy as many Gap gift cards as I can because there’s currently a 20% discount on all Gap Inc cards. I’ve already bought and sold over $5k of Gap gift cards last week for a small profit plus the 6% cashback for using AMEX Blue Cash Preferred. I’ve also earned 10k Safeway fuel rewards points which is worth 10 fill ups at a $1/gallon discount. That’s up to $250 savings on gas which I’m giving away since I don’t put that much mileage on my 10-gallon Prius!
In followup posts (Part 2, Part 3), I’ll report back how I meet the $20k challenge and the total haul. As for the 100k Avios points, that’s enough to book four round-trip award tickets between the West Coast and Hawaii. I’ve already booked a trip to Disney Aulani in December using 100k Avios points I earned from the AMEX Platinum sign up bonus, so I’m not sure what I’m going to do with the next 100k points yet, but I’m stashing away a number of miles and points to help pay for the sponsored trips to Disneyland for kids with severe medical condition/disability.
That’s what “The FPT (5+2) Model” is all about – turning limited resources into abundance and blessings.
